With bated breath, we wait as long, slender leaves, the color of a shaded forest, unfurl, spindly stalks reach out, eager to cling. In the coming weeks, these feather-light briars will produce the diminutive sapphire gems that will punctuate our shared Oregon summer.
That familiar burst of tart, nectarous berry flesh, the silky, azure skin; so fragile it could tear like an overfilled water balloon, the fragrance of ripe blueberries — these things define our summers in Gresham.
