Pope Francis Welcomes Spring With Free Ice Cream For The Homeless
on Monday, April 30, 2018In celebration of his name day, the feast of St George, Pope Francis is treating 3,000 homeless people in Rome to gelato in his latest act of charity for the destitute. The Office of Papal charities reported to Italian news agency Ansa that the internationally beloved desert would be available to those receiving assistance at soup kitchens and homeless centers in the Rome.
As Rome temperatures rise to unseasonable levels, typically not expected till the peak of summer, the gelato is a particularly thoughtful treat for the city’s population living in poverty.
From the CatholicHerald.co.uk:
“The Pontiff has emphasized care for the poor and marginalized as a key theme of his papacy, saying that “we should be worried when our consciences are anesthetized and we longer see the brother or sister suffering at our side”. He has previously advised Catholics to give money to the homeless and not worry about how it is spent. Archbishop Krajewski’s office frequently distributes sleeping bags to the homeless, manages several shelters and invited several homeless people to have breakfast with Pope Francis on the occasion of his 80th birthday.”
